I am having too much fun taking pictures of these gorgeous orange chips and powder! The rich, sunny colors and beautiful, deep details just makes me want to keep clicking away!
Anyway…
I’ve already used this beautiful powder for a few things and have many more delicious plans for it! It smells like sunshine every time I open up the jar… hmm, must remember that when we have dark, rainy & cloudy days!
After dehydrating all those sunshine {orange} slices and enjoying them like chips and steeped in tea… I began to wonder if there were other ways to enjoy these yummy orange chips.
I googled around and came across this site that suggested to chop or grind the orange chips into powder, which can be used to flavor soup, fish, sauces or use has a garnish.
hmmm… interesting.
So, I threw in enough orange chips to fill my Blendtec and gave it a whirl… well, several whirls until it was powdery and smooth. It looks a little crumbly because of the natural oils from the rinds… simply wonderful!
I pour the powder into an airtight quart mason jar and kept throwing in more orange chips until I had almost 2 quarts full of tangy orange powder. And I still have about 1 1/2 gallons of orange chips to enjoy!
Ahh, lovely!
I have already used it to spice up cinnamon rolls, make drinks, give a tangy crunch to our favorite snack and more. I will {hopefully} be sharing these recipes soon!!
When you make these, make sure you store them out of direct light to protect the natural oils. They should last a long time ;o)

Hey there! I am just curious about the taste of the rind being grounded into powder with the flesh of the citrus. I’m thinking about drying orange, lemon, and lime slices to use in DIY loose leaf teas as well as ginger and turmeric tea to take camping. I also like making lemon leaf tea made with the lemon tree leaves, lemon juice, and honey. I dehydrated honey to take camping so it would be great to dehydrate the rest of the ingredients. Anyway, I’d love any tips or information about how the ground citrus tastes with the rind. Is it possible that the type of each type citrus rind could impact the overall taste? Thanks!
Marillyn Beard says
Hi Renee!
Your teas sound so yummy!! the taste was very orange-y… it did not have a bitterness to it. I’m assuming that the drying process removed most of the bitterness. I loved the flavor as it was very bright and citrusy. I also liked making tea with them too. I only dried oranges so I can’t help you with lemons and limes, but I would think you would probably get similar results! And I believe each has its own unique flavor, so I would try them separately before combining them.
Donna Gonzales-Vera says
I have made ground dried orange peels, but using the whole orange is a great idea. I could try this with limes and lemons to. Thanks
Marillyn Beard says
Donna – yeah, using the whole orange gives a delicious punch into anything! I want to try lemons next!

Thanks for this post on how to make tangy orange powder. Great pictures.

I used to do this…and I even mixed some of the powder with natural yogurt and made a fantastic face mask!
Marillyn Beard says
Very interesting! Will need to try that! I’m sure the orange face mask would leave your face feeling tingling and refreshed. Thank you for sharing… what else did you use the powder for?

Do you dip your slices in lemon juice or use citric acid to keep them so orange looking? I’ve dried them and they seem to turn brown. Maybe I dehydrate them so long but afraid to under dehydrate for fear of mold, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Cindy
Marillyn Beard says
Hello Cindy!
No, I do not use lemon juice or any citric acid. Most of my oranges are sour oranges, don’t know if that is why they dry up nice and orange looking. But it sounds like you might be over-drying your oranges.
You will know that they are done when they don’t feel sticky and moist. Take the amount of time you’ve been drying them and cut it back at least 5 hours. You should put your oranges in the night before and check them in the morning, then check them again at lunch and check them again at dinner until they are dry, but they might have a little stickiness…that’s normal because they will dry up once they cool.

Thank you so much Marilyn! I figured that was what I was doing….I’ll give it another go!

I read somewhere it was mot safe to though oranges in juicer without being peeled. Is it safe to eat all that peel this way?
Marillyn Beard says
Yes, it is safe as long as the oranges are organic. The peel is rich in Vitamin C and safe to consume in moderation.

Great pictures! I’ve tried Lemon powder & its lovely, too. Did you know a standard canning jar fits a blender base? Blend your powder straight in the jar & you don’t have to clean the blender carafe. I’ve done garlic powder and chili powders this way, too.
Marillyn Beard says
Thank you Traceyo! I am sure the lemon powder is lovely… would love to find me some chemical free lemons to do that. I am going to dry some limes and make lime powder soon!
Yes, I have heard that, but I own a Blendtec… so, that wouldn’t work for me. But it is a great idea for those who have that option!!
Orange powder says
What kind of orange are you using? They are so dark, aren’t they?
Marillyn Beard says
I’m not sure what kind of oranges they are. They are very tart. They dried a beautiful golden orange.
Kathy says
I just powdered up 8 lbs of naval oranges today!! The smell is so wonderful!!! I discovered that I like Orange powder in a cup of green tea…it doesn’t dissolve but you definitely get that Orange punch of flavor!! I think I like it better than using lemon!! I’ve had Orange powder used in a glaze for salmon….Oh my…delish!! I’m STILL going to get my hands on that recipe!!! Enjoy your own sunshine!!! 🙂
Marillyn Beard says
😀 Awesome!
Deborah says
Can you do the same with lemons? We use lemon pepper a lot, but I want to make our own, maybe with out the pepper part.
Marillyn Beard says
Yes you can! 🙂
Michelle says
Hi, i was just wondering if the rinds and/or pith make this a bit bitter? I know it doesn’t taste as good raw with them so I wanted to know if it was different dried…
Marillyn Beard says
Hi Michelle! No, the powder was not at all bitter. It tasted just like eating an orange. Very good for baking and cooking.
Wendy says
Hi do you remove the orange seeds or is everything dried and grounded. Thanks for sharing the orange powder idea.
Marillyn Beard says
Everything is dried and grounded, Wendy! 🙂 My pleasure!
Allison says
Could this be used as a juice mix? Will it flavor water like a juice powder. It sounds wonderful. I just got a dehydrator yesterday so I’m learning all the things I can make with it. Thanks!
Marillyn Beard says
Hi Allison,
No, the powder won’t dissolve completely in liquid. It will be very grainy, BUT you can try flavor the water and draining it before drinking.
Cheryl says
I love this. I am going to try this. This may sound like a silly question but can you rehydrate and drink as a juice?
Marillyn Beard says
H1 Cheryl! Not a silly question… yes you can add to water and drink… it won’t be like juice, more like flavor water. And it won’t completely dissolve.
